CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“I am sorry it came to this, Aidan,” the face of Ostorius Nix said on the communication screen.

“It doesn’t have to,” Aidan said.

Nix nodded. “Yes, it does.”

“Then I’m sorry too.”

“I will keep to my promises,” Nix said. “For the sake of your father, and for the sake of the United Colonies.”

“And the other shuttle?”

“It will go with you. I do not wish professional and diplomatic relations between our two groups to suffer because of a personal disagreement.”

“I hope that your people working with us will help us to rebuild our trust in one another.”

“For what it is worth,” Nix said, attempting to lighten the tense atmosphere, “I wish you well. I trust you will keep us advised of your progress.”

“Of course. Go well, friend.”

Nix’s image bowed his head, and the screen before Aidan went blank.

“How did he find out anyway?” Aidan asked himself.

“Find out what?” Dan said, turning briefly to face Aidan.

“About me and Savana.”

“What about you?”

“He didn’t know we were married,” Aidan explained. “He took a shine to her, it seemed harmless enough so we let him believe he had a chance.”

“You scammed the governor of the Ptah?” Dan laughed, incredulously. “Beautiful!”

Aidan scowled at the Captain, not wishing to relive his error.

“So wait a minute,” Dan said. “Are you saying we got thrown out because Nix found out you two were married?”

“Yes,” Aidan said bluntly. Then, as realisation dawned on him, he added: “Why? Did you say anything?”

“Me?” Dan said, trying to sound innocent. “Not a word. Except...”

“Except what?” Aidan demanded.

“Well... he asked if I’d seen you yesterday, so I told him.”

“Told him what?”

“That I thought you’d gone to meet Savana.”

“It was that meeting that got us caught,” Aidan blurted. “I can’t believe you did that!”

“You can’t believe what I did?” Dan exclaimed. “Did you ever think that pretending not to be Savana’s husband and not at least telling the rest of us was a pretty stupid idea?”

Aidan had had enough, and stomped out of the flight deck to the crew cabin he shared with Savana, to think, and to pray.

So many thoughts rushed through his mind at once it took some time for him to focus his mind on God, but when he did he experienced Him with a clarity he had not known for some time.

He had so much to thank God for; not least his unique and undeserved place in God’s plan. Through his own selfishness Aidan had wronged both God and Savana in Ptah, and ultimately paid the price when they were caught, yet he had still left Ptah with all his possessions, an extra shuttle, the respect of a hundred crewmates, and an increasing closeness to God. For all of this Aidan was truly thankful, but still a doubt nagged at his mind. Wasn’t everything in place? What could be missing? Aidan asked himself.

“An heir,” Aidan said aloud, then lapsed into silent thought. Although the United Colonies might be the way God would fulfil His plan through him, Aidan wasn’t sure.

“God,” Aidan prayed
